The Tiger Snake is widespread in this district and can be seen during the day and night in the warmer months. It is nomadic, rarely staying in the same place for more than fifteen days. It feeds on small birds and mammals, frogs and skinks, climbing to raid birds’ nests or burrowing underground to catch mice, rats and rabbits. If disturbed it will move away, or hold its ground, ready to defend with raised head striking out, sometimes making a ‘hiss’ or ‘bark’ sound.

It gives birth every two years or so to up to forty live young who fend for themselves immediately. It is highly poisonous, producing large amounts of venom. The pattern bands can vary in width and intensity. Snakes, like all other wildlife, are protected.
